Purpose:

The purpose of this lesson is to promote reading, collaboration and communication by visiting an online e-book site, learning the process and posting audio book talks to our school wiki. In groups of 3, students will select a favorite picture book from the online e-book site and write a book talk script that will be recorded using Audacity in the computer lab. They will use the wiki page to collaborate on the script.  The students will create a pocast which includes the book title and author, genre, recommendations and a list of additional book titles by the same author. The intended audience for the book talk commercials are students in Grades 2 - 5.  Posting the final product on the wiki will allow the students to access their classmates recommendations to guide student selection of e-books books for independent reading and provide an opportunity to comment on the podcast book talks of others.

Method

1.  Students will form groups of 2-3.

2.  Groups will select a book from Tumblebooks online e-book site and listen to/ read it.

3.  Students will work collaboratively on a group wiki to write a script promoting their chosen book.

3.  Students will record a Book Talk as an Audacity mp3 file.

4.  Students will link their podcast (hosted by Pod-O-Matic on the school podcast site) to the wiki.

Materials

  • Laptop cart and access to Tumblebooks e-Library
